Which Power Platform Course Should I Take?

Power Platform is four products and a dozen exam codes, and the codes do not tell you which one you need. This is what each class is for.

First, what the platform actually is

Four things that share a licence and are otherwise quite separate. Power Apps builds forms and screens over your data. Power Automate runs workflows between systems. Power BI reports on data. Copilot Studio builds conversational agents.

Most people arrive needing one of them, not all four, and the mistake is starting with a broad platform overview when a single-product class would have solved the problem in two days.

If you are not sure what you need

One day, no prerequisites, and it covers all four products at a level that lets you tell them apart. Worth taking if you have been asked to evaluate Power Platform, or if your organisation has bought it and nobody is sure what to do with it.

Skip it if you already know which product solves your problem. It is an orientation, not a working class, and you will not build anything you keep.

I want to automate a workflow

This is the one most people actually need. Approval chains, notifications, moving files between systems, the recurring task somebody currently does by hand every Monday morning.

There are other Power Automate classes in the catalog and this is the one we point people at. It is built around building working flows rather than touring features, and it is the class where people leave with something running.

One thing worth knowing before you book: desktop automation is a different subject. If what you need is a robot clicking through a legacy application that has no API, that is the RPA class below, not this one.

I need to automate something with no API

Power Automate Desktop drives applications the way a person would, through the interface, which is what you are left with when a system has no integration options and no supplier willing to add them. Government agencies and long-established businesses have more of these than anyone likes to admit.

This is a developer class. Take it if you are building automation that others will depend on, not if you want to save yourself twenty minutes a week.

I want to build an app

Canvas Apps is the practical starting point. You will build screens over data you already have, which is what most internal apps turn out to be: a better form over a list somebody currently maintains in Excel.

Power Platform Developer is the full PL-400 certification path, and it is genuinely a developer course. Take it if you are extending the platform with code, integrating with external systems, or you need the certification. Do not take it as a first exposure.

I own the platform for my organisation

The Functional Consultant path, for the person who configures the platform for everyone else rather than building one thing on it. Take it if you are the person other people ask.

What about Power BI?

Power BI is part of the licence and almost never part of the same job. If reporting is what you need, the four Power BI classes have their own sequence and their own starting points, and PL-900 will not get you there.

Training a team

Power Platform rewards private delivery more than most subjects, because the useful exercise is automating something you actually do. A class spent building a flow your team will keep using is worth several spent on sample scenarios.
